The Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, an international treaty by the United Nations, was established to standardize traffic rules and improve road safety for international traffic. It was agreed upon during the United Nations Economic and Social Council's Conference on Road Traffic, held from October 7 to November 8, 1968, in Vienna. Concluding on November 8, 1968, the convention aimed to replace previous agreements, such as the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, with updated regulations.It officially came into effect on May 21, 1977. Although 83 countries have ratified the convention, non-ratifying countries may still align with its standards. The conference also introduced the Convention on Road Signs and Signals to enhance international road safety further.
