Concluding on November 8, 1968, the convention aimed to replace previous agreements, such as the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, with updated regulations. It officially came into effect on May 21, 1977. Although 83 countries have ratified the convention, non-ratifying countries may still align with its standards.
